The 2012 Mini Trek took place from August 3rd to August 5th. We had 8 scouts and 3 adults finish the Trek. The troop hiked 12 miles along the Pacific Crest Trail from White Rock Lake to Donner Summit.
On Friday night, we camped near White Rock Lake after hiking in about 1 mile along the road. On Saturday morning, we hiked along the Pacific Crest Trail up out of the White Rock Lake Valley, and we stopped at the top of the ridge to rest and take in the great scenery. Then we descended into Paradise Valley where we stopped to eat lunch and to refill water from the stream. Next we hiked up out of Paradise Valley and then descended into Round Valley. We camped Saturday night in Round Valley which is flanked by the spectacular 9017 foot Basin Peak and the spectacular 9103 foot Castle Peak. We had a thunderstorm come through around 11:00 PM. Luckily everyone was in their tents, so everyone stayed dry. On Sunday morning, we hiked over Castle Pass and then descended down to Donner Summit. We crossed under highway 80 in a tunnel designed for hikers. Finally, we made it back to the Pacific Crest Trailhead near Boreal where our cars were waiting for us.
Thanks to Zachary Burgess and Alexander Mellerski for helping to plan the trek and providing leadership. Thanks to adults Paul Keiefer, Charels Potter, and Jon Traum for accompanying the scouts on the trek.
