On Friday, August 9th, 16 scouts and 10 adults met at Dave’s house to get everyone situated for the ride to Loon Lake. We got there safely and hiked about a mile in to our campsite and set up tents well before dark. The next morning we packed up and group B set out with 7 scouts and 5 adults, hiking over rough terrain to reach our destination at Rockbound Lake in Desolation Wilderness. Meanwhile, group A, after getting a leisurely start, arrived around 1:30 PM (which is about the same time group B got to our camp) at Lake Winifred at almost 7000 ft. elevation. After setting up camp, some scouts in group B went swimming while others went fishing. Almost everyone enjoyed Mountain House dinners. Group A took a walk around the lake, collecting trash, and including a scramble up and down a rock outcrop with wonderful views down to Rockbound Lake as well as of the whole of Lake Winifred and their campsite. Some scouts slept out under the stars to watch the Perseid Meteor shower in fantastic conditions under the dark and moonless sky. Group B got up at 6:00 AM the next morning and hit the trail by 7:30, commendable speed breaking camp. We met up with group A at 9:00 on Sunday, and hiked with them on the trail back to the parking lot. We got there around noon, and Jon Traum and I held a Scout’s own. After a lot of traffic, we finally made it to the In N’ Out in Placerville for a quick lunch. We then went back to Dave’s house and returned all the gear after drying the tents. Thank you to everyone for making this trip a great one and for practicing the principles of Leave No Trace!
