On Saturday, June 27, 2015, while at Philmont Scout Ranch in the mountains of New Mexico, Alden Brock was swept away by a flashflood in the early hours of the morning. Our crew was camped near Indian Writings staff camp when the water swept through their campsite. Several of our scouts and a staff member were also caught in this surge of water and managed to get to safety. Unfortunately Alden was not able to escape. He was found by rescue crews almost one mile from the camp. Our hearts go out to the Brock family during this difficult time.
Our troop participated in a special evening of remembrances to honor Alden, his family and our Scouting community. Troop 380 has set up a fund to assist the Brock’s. Also the Golden Empire Council and Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico have set up similar accounts to assist with the Brock Family and other scouts on High Adventures.
Cindy and Roger Brock want to extend their appreciation to everyone who has assisted them during these tough times and for the overwhelming kind words, thoughts and prayers. Alden is survived by his mother, Cindy, father Roger, and brother Russell who is an active member of our troop who loves scouts.
Troop 380 and Crew 380 continue their treks at Philmont. They dedicated their journey to Alden.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 8, 2015.
On September 28, Cindy and Rodger took home the “Spirit of the Eagle,” a Boy Scouts of America honorary posthumous special recognition for a youth member who has lost his or her life in an accident or through illness.
